Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine in which your Genesis Functional Medicine practitioner inserts ultrathin needles into key points along your body, known as meridians.

By stimulating specific areas of your body with the needles, your acupuncture practitioner can relieve pain and improve whole-body wellness.

What kind of conditions does acupuncture help with?

The World Health Organization lists more than 30 different conditions that responded well to acupuncture during clinical trials. Some popular applications for acupuncture include:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Arthritis pain
  • Allergies, like hay fever
  • Chronic gastritis symptoms
  • Headaches

Although acupuncture is mainly used for pain relief, it’s also helpful for other situations. For example, some patients find that acupuncture helps with depression.

Every patient is different, so your Genesis Functional Medicine care provider will help you determine whether acupuncture is a good fit for your needs.

How does acupuncture treatment work?

You’ll sit or lay down in a comfortable position, based on your care provider’s guidance. After cleaning the treatment sites, your acupuncture provider at Genesis Functional Medicine inserts sterile needles in the key medians.

A typical acupuncture session includes around 10-12 acupuncture points, but it can vary based on your condition and needs.

Typically, the acupuncture needles stay in place for 5-30 minutes. Acupuncture isn’t painful, but you might feel some mild tingling or a dull ache. Many patients say they don’t feel anything at all during the treatment.

What happens after acupuncture sessions?

There’s no downtime after an acupuncture treatment, and you may feel either very relaxed or extra energized. Everyone responds differently, but in general, there aren’t any negative side effects and you can return to your usual routine as soon as your treatment’s complete.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

It’s different for everyone. In most cases, patients respond best to a series of sessions, usually once or twice a week for about 5-6 weeks.

Your Genesis Functional Medicine care provider discusses your symptoms and your response to treatment with you in detail to determine what kind of treatment plan works best for you.

Acupuncture can relieve your pain and even enhance your overall wellness, depending on your needs. To learn whether acupuncture is right for you, call Genesis Functional Medicine or book your appointment online now.
